Recently, I was asked to define what kind of shopper I am.
The terms spendthrift, impulse buyer and window-shopper all immediately came to mind but I eventually concluded that ‘aspirational shopper’ defined me most.
I spend a huge amount of time browsing online, searching through the ‘What’s New’ sections of my favourite online-retailers – many of whom I can’t afford and probably don’t need.
Last night, I watched ‘Robert Peston Goes Shopping’; a documentary by Robert Peston, the business correspondent for the BBC, where he examines the impact of online shopping on the high-street retailer. He revealed that last year, 10% of the UK’s retail sales came from online purchases and that this figure is set to rise to 25%.
What brings people online?
For me, it’s the ease with which it fits into my busy schedule and lifestyle. Whilst on the bus, I can simply sift through Zara‘s womenswear collection via their app or with a few taps on the screen of my phone, I can check to see if River Island have that mohair jumper back in stock. From the ‘comfort’ of the number 16 bus, I can also purchase these items and arrange for them to be delivered, sometimes before I get home that evening.
With many companies offering paid postage on items that do not fit and have to be returned, the allure of online shopping continues to accelerate – for me, anyway!
One online brand which has assembled an impressive fan base is ‘Boohoo’. (In your head, you’re also whispering ‘Boohoo.com’, right?!)
Last week, I was invited to take a look at the company’s impressive Christmas Collection in The House on Leeson Street (a very swanky venue).
The Irish market is one of the biggest investors in ‘Occasion Wear’, particularly during the festive season. Thus, Boohoo’s festive assortment is brimming with sequins.
While there were rails filled with beautiful dresses that were all-sequin, dressing head-to-toe in glitter is not something that suits my body shape.
I much prefer to wear one sparkling piece and keep the rest of my outfit rather neutral. Thus, my favourite items from the press day are included in the above image.
If I had to choose just one item though, it would probably be the gold glitter peplum shorts. I know, peplum has saturated the market and most are probably tired of the trend but I love how it highlights and clinches my waistline and ever-so-slightly camouflages my not-so-small hip measurement.
However, it wouldn’t be a press day if I didn’t try on some sort of ridiculous millinery!
This faux-fur hat is one of my favourites and will probably be the first thing that I buy from Boohoo’s seasonal selection.
Oh, and thank you to the very lovely Grace Moore for taking the photograph!
